The 2022 winners of the second annual Storm Photos of the Year competition have been revealed. Affectionately dubbed “The Stormys,” the competition is organized by seasoned storm/landscape photographer Mike Olbinski. The renowned photographer founded this yearly competition to recognize the devotion of both professional and amateur storm photographers.
Storm photography is sometimes regarded as one of the most challenging disciplines to perfect. A photographer must be skilled with composition and settings, but storm photography also involves meticulous preparation and devotion to staying safe in a risky situation.
Three categories were available in this year’s contest: Photo of the Year, Tornado Photo of the Year, and Photographer. The first two categories were created to highlight the most “great, single shots taken the previous year in their respective categories,” while the third category honors “the accomplishment of assembling an exceptional series of ten images taken in 2021.”
The winners for 2022 in their respective categories were Alexis Maillard for Photo of the Year, Everett Occhippinti for Tornado Photo of the Year, and Amy Howard for Photographer of the Year.
Here are winners and runners-up in the Photo of the Year and Tornado Photo of the year categories. Also, you can admire a selection of images from Photographer of the Year Amy Howard’s winning portfolio.
